Finish up week!
Hi Everyone,
As you probably know, this is the last chance to finish up your work. Grades are due this week. I will be submitting grades on Friday morning. Review the section of the syllabus entitled "Academic Expectations" and make sure that all of the work you'd like me to see is posted to your fotothing account. I have been leaving positive comments on most of the images posted to your fotothing account that is worthy of your "final portfolio".... If the image has not been commented on, or if I left a comments that implied you could have done better, you probably missed the mark on it. If I left positive comments on one image of a series and you have others like it, then the comment applies generally to the group. I have tried to get you to work with and appreciate natural light and to fill the frame with intentional design. Incandescent, flourescent and flash light sources generally do not count. Out of focus pictures generally don't count either unless they specifically are about expressive movement. Your portrait series should have good natural light falling across the face... the macro series should be about natural form and light and also be sharp.
You should all be proud of what your have accomplished. Many of you started with no experience in working with digital images, much less blogging and creating an online portfolio of images. Your work posted to fotothing.com has been commented on by photographers all over the world. I hope you will continue to post there and keep growing and learning all you can in this new medium. I hope this has been a worthwhile and great learning experience for you. :)

Week 7
This may or may not be the best one, but the style is one of the reasons i love digital imagery/photography! There are a couple I did without the Wadsworth painter just from photos i've taken in Photoshop. I've definitely enjoyed the class, though I wish work had pissed off a bit more and given me time to take more photos, but after such a long term away on chemo, i guess they were eager to get their share too. I've truly enjoyed looking at everyone's work and found many ideas i'd like to try myself. And if nothing else, it's solidified my decision as to buying a digital SLR.

Hi all,
Well, this was my least favorite assignment. I guess my creativity is on the low end of the scale regarding surrealism. I also had problems understanding that you moved from the Wadsworth site to Paint to Picasa. Once I figured that out it did become simpler. The more images you created the easier it became.

Here is the link to my surreal picture. Im sorry its late but i havent had access to the internet because my new computer doesnt pick up my wireless signal like my old one did.
Anyway i had fun with this assignment. It was kind of cool playing with objects in the different backgrounds. I think my picture makes sense in a weird way. It does to me at least. anjoy!

My Last Post

Hey Everyone... I truly enjoyed all of your creative pictures!! This blog and your fotothing pages have been very enjoyable and I will continue to peek at your FT pages! Best of luck to all of you as you finish up your classes! I thought I would grab an "About Town" picture and found the Cheshire Volunteer FD on a practice drill at The Playground in the Park. So I grabbed my camera (and ok I admit it.. freshend up my lipstick) and took some shots. Here it is in a picassa collage.

Another Portrait

ok... :) was debating on posting this one because when you look at it you think what is this child doing?!? actually he was quite done with the whole photo session at this point. I agree with Jerry that the first shot of him had the sun too bright on his face and washed him out. After playing with the shadow and b&w feature this pic came out a bit better...don't be thrown off by his state of worship "pose" truly it just happened that way!

Portraits

Not only late, but piss-poor. I had such a hard time getting the light and detail without a flash (I may have to suck it up and get an SLR because I get frustrated trying to adjust the seetings aand then to catch the shot, my "partner in crime" was especially difficult because she won't stop moving) . I avoided self-portraits because I'm very camera shy, and certainly not photogenic.Tuesday, February 27, 2007

A Try at Picassa Collage
Sunday, February 25, 2007
Well, I have to say of all the assignments we have done this mod, this was by far, the most difficult for me. Looking back now at how I could have taken the shots, maybe I could have made it a little less difficult. I should have been standing closer to the window and shooting from the light at the subject but instead, I was standing either more to the side of the subjects or directly in front of them. Things to learn and continue to improve as time goes on (outside of this class, as this is the last series of photographs I will take for this class...sniff, sniff). I have to say, this was the best class I have taken at Albertus. I had so much fun taking photographs, learning how to take better shots, things to do and not do. I've always liked taking pictures; now I have to say, I love taking photographs. I find myself thinking more and pausing for a few seconds before just snapping a picture. I set myself up for a shot in a completely different way now and I set my subjects (people or otherwise) up in a different way now than I used to before taking this course.
I have learned a lot about editing as well and I can't wait to continue using what I've learned (especially this June on my honeymoon in Antigua...!!!)
(her face was so cute here but really I should have had her further back in the light and should have been taking the shot from against the window looking out at her, but at any rate, isn't she adorable?)

I found this assignment rather difficult. These are two women I work with who were gracious enough to let me photograph them. Even though one picture is not super clear I felt it captured the person as I see her. I did put heavy tissue paper on the window for the first picture. I was never sure in picasa if I should sharpen the portrait, I did however, do a lot of cropping and adding highlights.

Week 7: How to proceed

Hi all,
Read the portion of the syllabus that discusses Week 7... You may post images created using the Atheneum's "Painter" or create your own overlays of images using the collage mode in Picasa. To recap from the syllabus how to save your picture from the Atheneum's site:
To save your creation.... From the Athenaeum site, bring up your image, hit the "print screen" key on your pc keyboard. (Use grabber on a Mac). Go to your image editing application (not picasa) and go to menu item FILE>NEW>ENTER then after the new blank file opens, EDIT>PASTE. Crop away all the parts you don't want and save the file as a .jpg and upload from there. All PC's come with a free image editor called Paint located in the Accessories submenu... PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>PAINT. Save the file as a jpeg (.jpg), not a .bmp.
Have fun with the composited project this week... don't think too hard about it... just play... edit down to your best work... remember to post one here and 6 or more on fotothing!

Portraits
I decided to take picutres of my brother; after all, I'm older than him, so I forced him into it. I had him play his guitar as I shot, which hopefully gave the pictures a more "natural", unforced look. None-the-less taking portraits is hard; I took a total of 66 shots, and I only found ten workable ones, which I edited and posted to my fotothing. I found that B&W really does make the shot. Here are my two favorite ones.

Week 5-Macro
Well, I have to say this weeks assignment was both fun and difficult at the same time. I LOVE flowers, especially Gerber daisies so being able to get up close and personal with some Gerber daisies was great. From my left over bouquet of Valentine flowers, I also photographed some roses and other flowers (see series in fotothing) and found it difficult, even with the macro setting, to get a good focus on some of the flowers that close up. But I was able to come out with some good shots.I
played around with other things to photograph close up; paper clips, tacks, a mix of the two, q-tips (the q-tips were too white to get a good focus on). I liked how this pile of paper clips and tacks looked as a black and white image with a focal point on some of the colored tacks.

Mary's Portrait

Hi Mary and everyone... Sometimes it's easier to show rather than tell... I took the better bottom portrait and cropped it vertically and darkened the right side a bit... The results speak for themselves... So some tips for everyone... hold the camera vertically, use your zoom, move in close (I know I sound like a broken record) turn the face into the light and wait for all the emotion to calm down... the results are well worth it!

Macro Mode on My Coolpix
Hi All,
Last summer I went down to my local garden center in Wilton to shoot some macro pictures with my 3 mp coolpix. I first set it to macro mode (you need to read the manual) then moved in to less than an inch away. I held down the shutter button for a moment to give the lens time to focus...then gently continued squeezing the shutter until the image was taken. From about 20 minutes of shooting, I came away with maybe 40 of these... This was edited just in Picasa and put on the blog from Picasa too using the "Blog This" button. Notice that the frame is filled and that I pumped the light and color using the editing sliders.
You might still have some Valentine's flowers around.... what about a trip to Stop and Shop's florist department?
Take a look at these....
Grimacher is a french artist who has been having a ball with her digital camera on fotothing. Take a look at her Macro flowers here: http://fotothing.com/Grimacher/photo/3fb9b10915eea1088a830f5c2239c877/ or just go to fotothing.com/grimacher Her husband, Pondy, (fotothing.com/pondy has some beautiful crocuses as well... Take a look at how they use lighting and how the focal point is sharp and well lit. Notice how the image fills the frame... Every chance I get, I'll try to reinforce these main points! I'm at the Apple store at the Danbury Mall as I write this... Have fun!
Hi all,
I photographed my assignment this week as I did not have access to a scanner. I learned this week that my camera had a setting for close up (macro) pictures! Oh, the things we can learn. Also, the concept of bringing the item into focus really registered on this assignment. I like the dark background to accentuate the watches.

I love the way the flowers look when they are scanned with the door open... It gives them more depth. They seem to pop out at you.

week 4-shadows and light

I too, found this week's assignment to be difficult. Part of my problem was everytime I had the availability to be outside shooting, the sun was no where to be found. I was able to come up with the shadow of 2 flags on a flagpole which I really like. I sharpened the photo to bring out the textures in the road and to darken the shadow some.
Here, since I was unable to get the sun to cooperate with my schedule, I tried to get the shadow of a staircase against a wall when the sun
was no longer out (otherwise known as night). With the help of a bright spotlight atop my garage, I was able to take this photo of the staircase. I used black and white for some contrast and tried to lightened the photo being that it was dark from being night (with no flash). I was then able to add some shadow and although the photo seems a bit dark, I kind of like the strong, dark shadow that I was able to produce.

I croped the first picture of the guitar; I like how it stands alone. I also like the subtle highlights on the tuning knobs.
I have several more pictures of shadows on my fotothing, but I especially like the one below. I amped up the shadows to give balance to the photo.

Beach Assignment
I braved the cold on Sunday morning to take these pictures at my hometown beach, Walnut, in Milford Ct. This picture is in black and white and I used picasa to sharpen the image
I was walking down the beach and saw this footprint and I thought it would make an awesome picture. I used "feeling lucky" option in picasa and it definetly perked the picture up. Theres some shadow in the picture and some shells spread across the footprint.
I just wanted to let everyone know my Fotothing name is SRavis918..(original, I know!)...all of my pictures from this weeks assignment and past assignments are posted there!

Week 3 Assignment

Week 3-By the Sea

I liked how the water glistened here and the weeds gave a nice contrast to the photograph and the black & white gave it a softer feel.
This cluster of shells was interesting and looked good in black and white
but the center shell had such a nice yellowish color to it that I couldn't leave it out so I used the focal b&w to keep the color in the photo.

I loved the way the light shined on the water. By the rocks, it seemed to sparkle. Here, as the water splashed up against the rocks, the light glowed on it. I sharpened the photographs in picasa and added light to enhance the shimmer of light on the water.
Lights/Reflections
This was one of the pictures from my town's reservoir, I thought it would be good to use for this assignment because of the how the light hits the water. I used to picasa to lighten to the picture
and also crop.
and also crop.
Week 3... Water, Ice and Rocks.....

Today is a brilliant but freezing cold Sunday. As you consider what you will photograph, remember that I want you to photograph natural water (or in the case of today, ice! ) juxtaposed with another element such as stone, wood, rocks, etc... Actually, I am really interested in your approach to light and design again. Bright, contrasty light like we have today presents its own special challenge. Waiting for a more subdued light can improve your work as water is already fairly contrasty. If you live well inland, try to find a stream or other natural water course or body to work with. Remember to get in close and fill the frame.... only include sky if it adds to the design or mood of your image. Here is a time exposure I took last spring from the Saugatuck river behind the Mark Twain Library in Redding. See how the movement of the water contrasts with the sharp solidity of the stick and rock? I also used subdued lighting near sunset and put the camera on a tripod. The shutter exposure was about 20 seconds long. Have fun!
Week 3, By the sea

These pictures were both taken at Branford point park. I like the first because it looks like a wave that froze while it was splashing up on the shore. It was hard to find anything interesting to shoot because we are in the dead of winter. The next picture is a shot of some old piles attached to a dock. I like how you can see the water through the holes in the wood. I edited the pictures using Picaso. I played with the sharpen tool and i tried to focus on th epoint of interest i was trying to shoot.

Water and Ice
During the first week of the semester, I ended up taking loads of picutres of brooks and ice at Osbornedale State Park (before I even knew we were going to have a week of shooting water). Luckily, I managed to keep dry despit tip-toeing my way on slippery, mossy rocks. I had fun editing the pictures in Picasa (especially using the saturation effect and color temperature tuning). I have loads of pictures of water/ice on my fotothing: http://www.fotothing.com/drivers. But here are two that I like: On the first, I focused just on the ice and adjusted highlights, which gives the ice a nice wet-feel; almost like the ice is crying. On the second, I amped up the highlights to give the already sparkling water a little more motion; I like it in color, but I like it even more in BnW.
Tuesday, January 30, 2007
I took these pictures at Lighthouse beach. I used picasa to straighten and shapen images. Unfortunely, my computer crashed on Sunday after I post my pictures on fotothing. Prof. Nevins recommend to rotate the horizen but I have only copies now of my photos.

New Haven

These were taken during my lunch in New Haven, I had originally planned to take more but the weather was frigid. I enjoyed the challenge of finding interesting lines in buildings and close up objects but found it frustrating to get the shot from the right angle, as it's oftten in the middle of traffic.
Milford Beach

I think this is a beautiful picture... Where you can take a romantic walk on the beach with that someone special... That's my thought!
This was taken at Silver Sands Beach along with the picture below of Charles Island. This is another nice picture... Where you can walk out to the island but be sure to get back before the tide comes in... Or you will be stuck out there until the next low tide... Which is the following day.
Town of Milford

These two pictures were taken in Milford. The first picture is a reflection of Smith's Funeral Home across the street from the Princess Hair Salon. I thought it looked pretty cool in the window. The second picture is a waterfall near the green in Milford Center. I used picasa to edit this picture to black & white and then center the light area in the tunnel.

Week 2
Week 2 Assignment

Hello Everyone,
I have been having so much fun taking and editing photographs as well as looking at everyone else's photographs. There really is a lot of creativity out there.
I have been having so much fun taking and editing photographs as well as looking at everyone else's photographs. There really is a lot of creativity out there.
For this week's assignment, I chose 2 photographs that stood out to me. One is of a round window of a church. Although the church is beautiful, I thought the white window against the red brick stood out a lot and thought the photo would be more powerful if I came in close just on the window. I thought the design of the window was intriguing. I also liked how the tree branches were over the front of the window to add a certain contrast to the image.
The other photograph is of a fire escape on the side of an old, abandon building. I cropped the image and chose to convert it to black and white to give it more of a subtle feel to it. It reminds me of stories my father used to tell me of growing up in the "old neighborhood". When I look at this photograph, I can hear my Italian grandmother calling my father in for dinner; I can smell the spaghetti sauce cooking inside that window and I can imagine what it was like to live in an old Italian neighborhood in New York (only thing that's missing is the clothes line full of laundry coming off the fire escape).

Downtown New Haven
Hi all,
Well, as most greater New Haven residents know, the New Haven Coliseum was imploded last Saturday. Yesterday I went down to the site which was
one week later and took these photos. The black and white seem quite appropriate for the scene. It was a dreary morning without any sun. Today I passed the site and already landscape had changed. Men were working even though it was Sunday!
How many of you might have sat in section C row 18?

Homework Assignment 2
This picture was taken at the dock down behind Milford Library. I didn't use Picasa at all for this picture. The first thought that crossed in my mind with this picture was three generations which might not be the case, but the height difference between the three boys makes the picture seem this way. I also like the way the sun is hitting the ramp near the post.

Editing In Picasa

Hi All,
In many of the comments I post about your work, here and on Fotothing, I refer to pumping the light... pumping the contrast... and occasionally a conversion to Black and White. Here I took Antonio's shells (I love the shot) and have done just that. If you click on the image on the blog, it opens into a larger window and you can see the image better. (This is true of each photo posted to the blog). Taking the picture with your camera is only the first step.. Now editing the light, value, hue and saturation is the next step to bring out the most in your picture... and make it as expressive as it can be.

Today at the Beach

Hi Everyone- More pics on fotothing (Alltaurus51). The first is a rock formatiom that was on the beach with a special someone playing hide n seek... the second picture I took of the wooden fence to get a pattern but when I brought it up on the laptop I noticed the patterns all over it! The grass blowing in the wind and the other fence in the background... very cool...
In the Town of Cheshire

Hi Everyone- I am enjoying your pictures! This is fun.. my first real camera! I actually am a fan of b&w but for some reason I did'nt want to convert any of my pics. Maybe I am still getting used to the digital effect. The first picture is of an old tree trunk that I pass while walking the dog on the property of a private school in my town. I thought that it was cool because I was able to get close to it and capture the sunlight (after most of the day was cloudy!). The second is of my family room reflected off of the TV... this is afer we retuned from a cold day of photo taking and the sun was finally pouring in!
Week 2 photos

Hello Everyone! For this weeks assignment i decided to visit a local boat yard here in Branford. I wanted to take some pictures using interesting shadows but the weather has not cooperated, its been nothing but cloudy weather here all week! I like both these pictures because of the different textures. The first picture i thought was neat because the steps go nowhere. Also i like the moss growing on the concrete. The second picture is of a rock wall looking down to the water at low tide. I like the mixture of ice, rock, water and weeds. Both pictures i think capture the feeling of winter.

Assignment 2
What to Look For This Week-End

Hi All,
We are into the depths of winter now! As we head into the week-end you are probably planning your outing to go shooting. Remember to try to look for the small, special things on your walk... What combination of light and design can you find that you may not have noticed before. Resist the temptation to photograph the usual and the ordinary. A dull picture of a building in your town is NOT what I what to be looking at. A special turn of light, reflection, line or design is key here. I visit Watch Hill RI often as I sail out of Noank CT and that is a favorite destination of ours. This detail of porch and column I photographed is at the Ocean House. They recently tore the place down and I am so glad to have this... It is not a picture of the building, rather, I looked more carefully at the spaces of the building.. a distinction I would like you to focus on in your work this week.
The Urban Environment
I found this week's assignment rather difficult. I am ussed to shooting in a non-urban environment. It took me a while to adjust my viewing lens; but once I got going, I couldn't stop. I took a 2 mile walk around my town on Monday--it was cold and cloudy, but I had planned to go, so I did. It was strange to photograph on such a dark day; I was afraid my pictures would come out, "Blah!" But I was suprised at how much expression they have (of course Picasa helped alot). In addition to the pictures I post here, I have several others on my fotothing, www.fotothing.com/drivers please take a look and tell me what you think.

I have a great love for other poeple's photographs , and am hoping to learn to make own more interesting. Although I've taken numerous black and white 35mm shots, the digital aspect is fairly new to me but I especially like the freedom of ability to edit and manipulate the format.
My fotothing ID and blogspot posing name is jenovaix and I can be reached at jenovaix@hotmail.com or cwerner@wiggin.com

The first shot was the top of a cathedral mid day, the sky was gorgeous, it was hard to pick which shot I liked best but you can see the others on my fotothing if you like.
The second shot was of a glass Teepee the inside was gorgeous but I couldn't get in so I had to stick my camera in a crack and take what I could, you can see the inside on fotothing also.
Hi!
Intro
Hello everyone, My name is Nikkenia and this is my last year at AMC, although I have had fun, I am ready for it to be over. This is my first strictly online course and I am having a little trouble starting up because I am not a blogger. I also dont like having pictures on the net but this seems fun and I have already met a couple of friends and weirdo's. As I am taking these pictures I am realizing how much thought you really have to put into it for that shot. I am not very photogenic and I must have taken over 100 shots to get the right one. I seen this shot in my head and couldn't get no matter how hard I tried. Again, I think I am going to enjoy this course! My tag name is ladyb.

Hello
Hi all
Well, this is quite an experience. My adult children can't believe their mother is learning to blog. As of now I'm not quite sure if I will be successful on my first try. I'm concerned about the photo going through. I work at Albertus in the Registrar's office and have developed an interest in photography. What better way to spend the winter months than trying to learn something new. From my self portrait you may be able to surmise that I enjoy exercising outdoors even during the winter. The picture was taken around 7am returning from my walk on the sidewalks of New Haven. (no flash per instructions)

What to I need to get done this week?
Hi Everyone,
Some of you are off to a great start already... Many have not shown up yet or contacted me. I expect there will be more activity this week-end. Next week we will move on to our first formal assignment of finding line, shape, mass and light around a village/city environment. It is VERY important to get all of the technical issues resolved this week and to have your bio and self portrait posted here before Monday.
Things to do this week, by Sunday.
1. Create your Blooger Account. Reply to the email that blogger sent you by clicking on the link. If the link is not an active one, copy and paste it into your browser window and hit return... you will be brought to the correct log-in page. To learn how to post and log in read this tutorial I created on my website. I wrote it for my last class so now the name of this blog has changed to Digital Photography, Mod 2. You can view a video I created, "How to Post to the Blog" Here.
It really is easy.... If you have an alias like "Inspector" or "Snapshot", let me know who you are so you can get credit for the post!
2. Post a photo of yourself... be creative! Try a reflection, your shadow, or just a straight shot. Tell us something about yourself.
3. Download and install Picasa2 software... This takes just a couple of minutes. Look at the videos on how to use Picasa2 I created by following the link from the blog or syllabus. Learn how to get pictures from your camera onto your computer using Picasa2. If you are already using Photoshop, continue to use that. Most folks though aren't already using it and the expense and sttep learning curve associated with Photoshop is the reason I am suggesting you use Picasa2
4. Create a Fotothing account at fotothing.com... let me know your alias and go to http://fotothing.com/jnevins and add me as a "friend". I need to find you and add you as a "friend" in order for you to show up in my list of friends... either post your screen ailas here on the blog ( a good idea) or send me an email...
It is VERY important to get these technical issues out of the way in this first week so that you don't fall behind!
Let me know if you are having any trouble in any way.... I am here to help!
Best wishes for a great class for you!
Jerry

Sorry im late!

Hi my name is Brooke. Ok alittle about me.. I just moved in to a new apartment the last week of December in Branford. I teach at a Montessori school in Cheshire. This is my second year teaching at the same school and i really enjoy it. I am taking this class because I have a new found interest in photography and wanted to find out more about it. I have been taking picture for a friends band for the last 3 years using my digital camera. I think i am getting pretty good at it! I also have learned a lot about uploading and downloading photos and posting the files on to the bands website. You might say photography has become a hobby of mine.
I am a pretty creative person. I use art in my life everyday, at work, home and on weekends when the band plays. At work i have put together two scrapbooks using pictures from important events during the school year and daily work time for my classroom. The children enjoy visting the Book Corner to flip through it. At home my computer has hundreds of files full of pictures of friends and family, the band and my students. On weekends you can usually find me with my camera in hand taking action shots of the band while they play and the audience dancing and singing along. I think my pictures have approved over the years and i have learned a lot from lining up shots and when to use the flash.
Well thats about all i can think about writing now. I loook forward to taking lots of pictures!

Alittle about the picture i posted. This was taken in my new bathroom through the shower stall door. I think it gives an interesting effect kind of like water.
Impressed by the high tech?

Hello Everyone!

Hi, my name is Mary Iaffaldano, I am married to a wonderful husband (Dino) of 23 years. We have two beautiful children, a boy and a girl. I enjoy creating web pages, digital scrap booking, and taking pictures (except of me). I decided to go back to school and get my degree in MIS (Management Information Systems). I really enjoy anything that has to do with computers, thats why I am taking this course now. I think I can get a lot out of it and use what I learn on my digital scrap booking and web pages. My Fotothing name is "iaffy".

distorted self portrait
Hello everyone,I am so very new to this, I know very little of what I am doing. Hopefully, this comes out right. Let's see...a little about myself....I'm not crazy about having my picture taken (hence the distorted portrait). This may sound strange but I took this picture in the ladies room at work today. There is a contraption on the wall that holds the "neat seats" in them....anyway, as I was walking out of the ladies room, I caught my reflection in it at the last second and said, wait a minute....this might just work....so I grabbed my camera out of my bag, held it up and took the shot....this is the result. Like I said, I don't know much of what I'm doing when it comes to photography but I am really hoping to learn. I love taking pictures so I hope I can now learn how to take good ones. Okay, I think I got off track a bit...I wanted to say a few things about myself. I am a senior at AMC. I have 3 courses left until I graduate (in May...yippie!!!) with my B.S. in General Psychology. I am getting married this June so some of the pictures I put in my portfolio may have something to do with my wedding/wedding plans. I have a beautiful 3 year old niece that I love more than the world and she will probably be in a lot of my portfolio pictures as well. Right now, I am taking my pictures with a Kodak Easyshare CX7530 but I just purchased a new Kodak Easyshare C875 Zoom (I expect delivery Monday so that will be a new fun toy to play with while learning to take photographs) :) Well, I suppose I should wrap this up for now. I really look forward to working with everyone and getting to know some great "stuff" about photography. By the way, my fotothing name is "mariapiscitelli". I can't wait to start sharing photos with everyone!!
Eileen B.

Hi, I wish I was more experience with digital photography as I am with a microwave. I look forward to this course, I need help with downloading, uploading, etc. I am a senior at AMC, having return to school to finish my B.A. which I started 30 years ago! Now you know why I prefer this image of myself....!
Anyway, I am also a mother, wife, and Adm. asst.
Frying Pan Self Portrait

Two themes you will be hearing a lot about from me will be.... 1. Turn off your flash and 2. Get in closer! Although you will become proficient tecnically at posting to the blog, creating a portfolio, editing your digital pictures and so much more, this class at its heart is still an art class. I am most interested in encouraging you to break out of your "normal" way of taking pictures and want to get you to "think outside the box" As I was putting away the frying pan this morning, I saw this reflection of myself and thought that would make a good self portrait in the spirit of this first assignment.
Find new ways to look at the world around you. Discover light. Fill the frame with dynamic design!
Hello
Hello Everyone,
My name is Daniel Rivers. I am a senior at Albertus majoring in Mathematics and Education. In the fall semester last year, I took Mr. Nevins's Intro to Photography class; we worked in B&W film, and our final portfolios included only 12 pictures. I can see already that this class will include much more (I took 16 pictures alone for my self-portrait).
From my experience with the film based class I can say this...There is nothing like printing from negatives. I had Milford Photo develop two remaining rolls of film I had left over after the semester ended--they came out okay, but I would have printed them differently. Since it is so expensive to buy one's own developing equipment (not to mention having a dark room available), digital photography is great for those wanting to put the personal touch to their photos before having them printed by the local CVS. Also, the sheer quantity of electronic images is far cheaper than all the paper wasted in traditional printing.
Of the readings for this week, I agree that any art form, including photography, is more about communication of one's (or the photographed person's/thing's) perspective than it is about producing a thing of "art".
My Fotothing name is "drivers". Please post yours so we can add each other to our "Fotothing Friends". I look forward to looking at your interpretations.

How to Join This Blog
It is very important that you join the blog right away and start posting soon. The first assignment is to put a brief biography of yourself here on the blog and post a picture of yourself... not to worry though if you are the shy type... you can post your shadow, a distorted reflection or a just plain reflection... try to be a bit creative! The main issue you will constantly hear me harping on is to turn off your flash! I want each and every image you post for this class to be shot with natural, available light.
In order to post to the blog, you need to join the blog. To do that you have to click on the link blogger sends you in an email to your Campus Cruiser email account. You will be prompted to create a log in with a password... the process takes all of 15 seconds. Don't worry about creating your own blog.... just join this one!
View the video I created on how to use and post to the blog at http://jnevins.blip.tv
See you here soon!

Welcome!
Dear Class,
Welcome to our new blog which will be our meeting ground for sharing, viewing and discussing your work created during the Mod 3 '07, Introduction to Digital Photography course. Here we will post work created for each assignment. As part of the process, I'd like other students in the course to comment, share ideas and ask questions. Using free Picassa software from Google, you can organize, edit, publish, email and print all of your digital images. Step by step tutorials that I have posted will get you up to speed in no time.
I have found that using Picasa is the best way to get you moving at the fastest possible pace in this online format. Photoshop is expensive ($280 for the student version) and difficult to learn at first. This keeps the focus on your photography and shooting without being encumbered by the difficulty of the learning curve using photoshop. Click the link on the left to view some video tutorials I created to teach you some of the basics of using Picasa.
Again, welcome!
