Hi Everyone,

As you probably know, this is the last chance to finish up your work. Grades are due this week. I will be submitting grades on Friday morning. Review the section of the syllabus entitled "Academic Expectations" and make sure that all of the work you'd like me to see is posted to your fotothing account. I have been leaving positive comments on most of the images posted to your fotothing account that is worthy of your "final portfolio".... If the image has not been commented on, or if I left a comments that implied you could have done better, you probably missed the mark on it. If I left positive comments on one image of a series and you have others like it, then the comment applies generally to the group. I have tried to get you to work with and appreciate natural light and to fill the frame with intentional design. Incandescent, flourescent and flash light sources generally do not count. Out of focus pictures generally don't count either unless they specifically are about expressive movement. Your portrait series should have good natural light falling across the face... the macro series should be about natural form and light and also be sharp.

You should all be proud of what your have accomplished. Many of you started with no experience in working with digital images, much less blogging and creating an online portfolio of images. Your work posted to fotothing.com has been commented on by photographers all over the world. I hope you will continue to post there and keep growing and learning all you can in this new medium. I hope this has been a worthwhile and great learning experience for you. :)

This may or may not be the best one, but the style is one of the reasons i love digital imagery/photography! There are a couple I did without the Wadsworth painter just from photos i've taken in Photoshop. I've definitely enjoyed the class, though I wish work had pissed off a bit more and given me time to take more photos, but after such a long term away on chemo, i guess they were eager to get their share too. I've truly enjoyed looking at everyone's work and found many ideas i'd like to try myself. And if nothing else, it's solidified my decision as to buying a digital SLR.

Well, this was my least favorite assignment. I guess my creativity is on the low end of the scale regarding surrealism. I also had problems understanding that you moved from the Wadsworth site to Paint to Picasa. Once I figured that out it did become simpler. The more images you created the easier it became.

ok... :) was debating on posting this one because when you look at it you think what is this child doing?!? actually he was quite done with the whole photo session at this point. I agree with Jerry that the first shot of him had the sun too bright on his face and washed him out. After playing with the shadow and b&w feature this pic came out a bit better...don't be thrown off by his state of worship "pose" truly it just happened that way!

Not only late, but piss-poor. I had such a hard time getting the light and detail without a flash (I may have to suck it up and get an SLR because I get frustrated trying to adjust the seetings aand then to catch the shot, my "partner in crime" was especially difficult because she won't stop moving) . I avoided self-portraits because I'm very camera shy, and certainly not photogenic.

Well, I have to say of all the assignments we have done this mod, this was by far, the most difficult for me. Looking back now at how I could have taken the shots, maybe I could have made it a little less difficult. I should have been standing closer to the window and shooting from the light at the subject but instead, I was standing either more to the side of the subjects or directly in front of them. Things to learn and continue to improve as time goes on (outside of this class, as this is the last series of photographs I will take for this class...sniff, sniff). I have to say, this was the best class I have taken at Albertus. I had so much fun taking photographs, learning how to take better shots, things to do and not do. I've always liked taking pictures; now I have to say, I love taking photographs. I find myself thinking more and pausing for a few seconds before just snapping a picture. I set myself up for a shot in a completely different way now and I set my subjects (people or otherwise) up in a different way now than I used to before taking this course. I have learned a lot about editing as well and I can't wait to continue using what I've learned (especially this June on my honeymoon in Antigua...!!!)

(her face was so cute here but really I should have had her further back in the light and should have been taking the shot from against the window looking out at her, but at any rate, isn't she adorable?)

This wasn't the easiest assignment to do. First, not much sunlight and second, it's hard to keep a straight face! My boyfriend was nice enough to pose for me for this weeks assignment. I used picasa to sharpen and black and white the images.

Hi all,

I found this assignment rather difficult. These are two women I work with who were gracious enough to let me photograph them. Even though one picture is not super clear I felt it captured the person as I see her. I did put heavy tissue paper on the window for the first picture. I was never sure in picasa if I should sharpen the portrait, I did however, do a lot of cropping and adding highlights.

Hi all,
Read the portion of the syllabus that discusses Week 7... You may post images created using the Atheneum's "Painter" or create your own overlays of images using the collage mode in Picasa. To recap from the syllabus how to save your picture from the Atheneum's site:

To save your creation.... From the Athenaeum site, bring up your image, hit the "print screen" key on your pc keyboard. (Use grabber on a Mac). Go to your image editing application (not picasa) and go to menu item FILE>NEW>ENTER then after the new blank file opens, EDIT>PASTE. Crop away all the parts you don't want and save the file as a .jpg and upload from there. All PC's come with a free image editor called Paint located in the Accessories submenu... PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>PAINT. Save the file as a jpeg (.jpg), not a .bmp.

Have fun with the composited project this week... don't think too hard about it... just play... edit down to your best work... remember to post one here and 6 or more on fotothing!

I decided to take picutres of my brother; after all, I'm older than him, so I forced him into it. I had him play his guitar as I shot, which hopefully gave the pictures a more "natural", unforced look. None-the-less taking portraits is hard; I took a total of 66 shots, and I only found ten workable ones, which I edited and posted to my fotothing. I found that B&W really does make the shot. Here are my two favorite ones.

Week 5-Macro

Well, I have to say this weeks assignment was both fun and difficult at the same time. I LOVE flowers, especially Gerber daisies so being able to get up close and personal with some Gerber daisies was great. From my left over bouquet of Valentine flowers, I also photographed some roses and other flowers (see series in fotothing) and found it difficult, even with the macro setting, to get a good focus on some of the flowers that close up. But I was able to come out with some good shots.

I played around with other things to photograph close up; paper clips, tacks, a mix of the two, q-tips (the q-tips were too white to get a good focus on). I liked how this pile of paper clips and tacks looked as a black and white image with a focal point on some of the colored tacks.

For this picture, I used the sharpen option in Picasa.

I used Picasa color contrast to fix the lighting in the picture.....

...and this one is my favorite! I used saturation for the flower. The flower is a brighter pink, but I love how the saturation brought this picture out!

Hi Mary and everyone... Sometimes it's easier to show rather than tell... I took the better bottom portrait and cropped it vertically and darkened the right side a bit... The results speak for themselves... So some tips for everyone... hold the camera vertically, use your zoom, move in close (I know I sound like a broken record) turn the face into the light and wait for all the emotion to calm down... the results are well worth it!

Macro Mode on My Coolpix

Hi All,

Last summer I went down to my local garden center in Wilton to shoot some macro pictures with my 3 mp coolpix. I first set it to macro mode (you need to read the manual) then moved in to less than an inch away. I held down the shutter button for a moment to give the lens time to focus...then gently continued squeezing the shutter until the image was taken. From about 20 minutes of shooting, I came away with maybe 40 of these... This was edited just in Picasa and put on the blog from Picasa too using the "Blog This" button. Notice that the frame is filled and that I pumped the light and color using the editing sliders.

You might still have some Valentine's flowers around.... what about a trip to Stop and Shop's florist department?

I photographed my assignment this week as I did not have access to a scanner. I learned this week that my camera had a setting for close up (macro) pictures! Oh, the things we can learn. Also, the concept of bringing the item into focus really registered on this assignment. I like the dark background to accentuate the watches.

This beautiful red rose is real and was scanned with the scanner door open.

This lovely bouquet of flowers is not real... Again I scanned with the door open.

I love the way the flowers look when they are scanned with the door open... It gives them more depth. They seem to pop out at you.

I had a heck of a time with my point and shoot samsung in macro mode; it just wouldn't focus right, so I used my scanner. I think keeping the cover up, giving the rich black background, is the way to go with this project; it just makes the subjects "pop."

week 4-shadows and light

I too, found this week's assignment to be difficult. Part of my problem was everytime I had the availability to be outside shooting, the sun was no where to be found. I was able to come up with the shadow of 2 flags on a flagpole which I really like. I sharpened the photo to bring out the textures in the road and to darken the shadow some.

Here, since I was unable to get the sun to cooperate with my schedule, I tried to get the shadow of a staircase against a wall when the sun was no longer out (otherwise known as night). With the help of a bright spotlight atop my garage, I was able to take this photo of the staircase. I used black and white for some contrast and tried to lightened the photo being that it was dark from being night (with no flash). I was then able to add some shadow and although the photo seems a bit dark, I kind of like the strong, dark shadow that I was able to produce.

I found this week's assignment difficult. Trying to find light and shadow to shoot as form within themselves is hard. I found that B&W really does help this particular assignment.

I croped the first picture of the guitar; I like how it stands alone. I also like the subtle highlights on the tuning knobs.

I have several more pictures of shadows on my fotothing, but I especially like the one below. I amped up the shadows to give balance to the photo.

Beach Assignment

I braved the cold on Sunday morning to take these pictures at my hometown beach, Walnut, in Milford Ct. This picture is in black and white and I used picasa to sharpen the image

I was walking down the beach and saw this footprint and I thought it would make an awesome picture. I used "feeling lucky" option in picasa and it definetly perked the picture up. Theres some shadow in the picture and some shells spread across the footprint.

These are pictures of the Quinnipac River in Wallingford. They were taken where River Road goes right over the river. I like the way you can see the water, ice and the air bubbles. The picture of the water rippling over the rocks was taken on the other side to the bridge. I used Picasa to enhance both of these pictures.

Week 3-By the Sea

I liked how the water glistened here and the weeds gave a nice contrast to the photograph and the black & white gave it a softer feel.
This cluster of shells was interesting and looked good in black and white but the center shell had such a nice yellowish color to it that I couldn't leave it out so I used the focal b&w to keep the color in the photo.

I loved the way the light shined on the water. By the rocks, it seemed to sparkle. Here, as the water splashed up against the rocks, the light glowed on it. I sharpened the photographs in picasa and added light to enhance the shimmer of light on the water.

This was one of the pictures from my town's reservoir, I thought it would be good to use for this assignment because of the how the light hits the water. I used to picasa to lighten to the picture

Week 3... Water, Ice and Rocks.....

Today is a brilliant but freezing cold Sunday. As you consider what you will photograph, remember that I want you to photograph natural water (or in the case of today, ice! ) juxtaposed with another element such as stone, wood, rocks, etc... Actually, I am really interested in your approach to light and design again. Bright, contrasty light like we have today presents its own special challenge. Waiting for a more subdued light can improve your work as water is already fairly contrasty. If you live well inland, try to find a stream or other natural water course or body to work with. Remember to get in close and fill the frame.... only include sky if it adds to the design or mood of your image. Here is a time exposure I took last spring from the Saugatuck river behind the Mark Twain Library in Redding. See how the movement of the water contrasts with the sharp solidity of the stick and rock? I also used subdued lighting near sunset and put the camera on a tripod. The shutter exposure was about 20 seconds long. Have fun!

Week 3, By the sea

These pictures were both taken at Branford point park. I like the first because it looks like a wave that froze while it was splashing up on the shore. It was hard to find anything interesting to shoot because we are in the dead of winter. The next picture is a shot of some old piles attached to a dock. I like how you can see the water through the holes in the wood. I edited the pictures using Picaso. I played with the sharpen tool and i tried to focus on th epoint of interest i was trying to shoot.

During the first week of the semester, I ended up taking loads of picutres of brooks and ice at Osbornedale State Park (before I even knew we were going to have a week of shooting water). Luckily, I managed to keep dry despit tip-toeing my way on slippery, mossy rocks. I had fun editing the pictures in Picasa (especially using the saturation effect and color temperature tuning). I have loads of pictures of water/ice on my fotothing: http://www.fotothing.com/drivers. But here are two that I like: On the first, I focused just on the ice and adjusted highlights, which gives the ice a nice wet-feel; almost like the ice is crying. On the second, I amped up the highlights to give the already sparkling water a little more motion; I like it in color, but I like it even more in BnW.

These were taken during my lunch in New Haven, I had originally planned to take more but the weather was frigid. I enjoyed the challenge of finding interesting lines in buildings and close up objects but found it frustrating to get the shot from the right angle, as it's oftten in the middle of traffic.

Milford Beach

I think this is a beautiful picture... Where you can take a romantic walk on the beach with that someone special... That's my thought!

This was taken at Silver Sands Beach along with the picture below of Charles Island. This is another nice picture... Where you can walk out to the island but be sure to get back before the tide comes in... Or you will be stuck out there until the next low tide... Which is the following day.

Town of Milford

These two pictures were taken in Milford. The first picture is a reflection of Smith's Funeral Home across the street from the Princess Hair Salon. I thought it looked pretty cool in the window. The second picture is a waterfall near the green in Milford Center. I used picasa to edit this picture to black & white and then center the light area in the tunnel.

Hello Everyone,

I have been having so much fun taking and editing photographs as well as looking at everyone else's photographs. There really is a lot of creativity out there.

For this week's assignment, I chose 2 photographs that stood out to me. One is of a round window of a church. Although the church is beautiful, I thought the white window against the red brick stood out a lot and thought the photo would be more powerful if I came in close just on the window. I thought the design of the window was intriguing. I also liked how the tree branches were over the front of the window to add a certain contrast to the image.

The other photograph is of a fire escape on the side of an old, abandon building. I cropped the image and chose to convert it to black and white to give it more of a subtle feel to it. It reminds me of stories my father used to tell me of growing up in the "old neighborhood". When I look at this photograph, I can hear my Italian grandmother calling my father in for dinner; I can smell the spaghetti sauce cooking inside that window and I can imagine what it was like to live in an old Italian neighborhood in New York (only thing that's missing is the clothes line full of laundry coming off the fire escape).

Downtown New Haven

Hi all,
Well, as most greater New Haven residents know, the New Haven Coliseum was imploded last Saturday. Yesterday I went down to the site which was
one week later and took these photos. The black and white seem quite appropriate for the scene. It was a dreary morning without any sun. Today I passed the site and already landscape had changed. Men were working even though it was Sunday!
How many of you might have sat in section C row 18?

Homework Assignment 2

This picture was taken at the dock down behind Milford Library. I didn't use Picasa at all for this picture. The first thought that crossed in my mind with this picture was three generations which might not be the case, but the height difference between the three boys makes the picture seem this way. I also like the way the sun is hitting the ramp near the post.

This was taken at the Marina in downtown Milford. I didn't change the colors, but I did use Picasa to crop this picture. I thought this picture was cool because the reflection of the rocks underneath the water, also the ripple effect of the water.

This is one of my favorite pictures. This is behind SBC in Milford on the Harbor Bridge. This is how I orginally took the picture. Below, I went into Picasa and chose to tint the picture and came out with the picture below.

I took this picture in the center of town in Milford, CT. I then went on to Picasa and used the black and white option for this picture. I think the black and white brings more the picture and I love the faint shadow effect against the plaque.

Hi All,

In many of the comments I post about your work, here and on Fotothing, I refer to pumping the light... pumping the contrast... and occasionally a conversion to Black and White. Here I took Antonio's shells (I love the shot) and have done just that. If you click on the image on the blog, it opens into a larger window and you can see the image better. (This is true of each photo posted to the blog). Taking the picture with your camera is only the first step.. Now editing the light, value, hue and saturation is the next step to bring out the most in your picture... and make it as expressive as it can be.
